After the Great Rockies Sports Show in Helena, MT ended Wim began the long drive back to Colorado to meet clients in Denver and Grand Junction.  Along the way he stopped in Cheyenne, WY to meet Tom Weickum of "Rocky Mountain Artworks, Inc."  Tom has completed 12 African safaris and displays specimens of many of his trophies in his taxidermy shop.  Tom has won many awards over the years for the quality of his work.  He even custom makes his own taxidermy forms.  Check out Tom's website at

Chacma Safaris closed out the Great Rockies Sportshow in Helena, MT on a high note.  Of the three shows in this venue (the other two being Bozeman and Billings) this one had the smallest "footprint".  Just the same, the show was active, and attendees showed a good amount of interest in the adventure of an African safari.  We made lots of good contacts at the show, and in the community as well, and plan to attend once again next year.  We look forward to hosting Mike Draut (shown in photo with Wim) on his cape buffalo hunt in June.

Monarch Taxidermy is well-known in Helena, MT (  Their impressive shop is located out near the airport making it an easy location to receive trophy specimens from their many clients located in 37 different states.  They are quite busy and about to expand their building footprint onto the lot next door.  Wim visited with Ryan Butler of Monarch who showed Wim this impressive tri-mount of a kudu, nyassa wildebeest and cape buffalo that was about to be shipped out to happy client.

Sage works

On the way to Helena, MT for the Great Rockies Sportshow Wim visited a fairly new taxidermist in Dillon, MT.  Rob & Kelly Spitzer have built a strong clientele in short order out of their Sage Works Taxidermy establishment (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).  Rob has a very artistic exhibit in the front entrance to his studio and delights in making some pretty nifty displays out of old ranch and farming gear combined with his excellent taxidermy specimens.  In this photo Rob mounts a dear head as though it is just been caped and strapped to a vintage pack frame (all rustic items he collects and fabricates) to create a different and interesting effect.  He states that this is good way to salvage a cape that may have been damaged in the field dressing process.

African oasis

When heading to Helena, MT for the Great Rockies Sport Show Wim was a bit surprised on the drive up I-15 when just outside of Dillon, MT he encountered a billboard displaying an imposing image of a cape buffalo. Taking the next exit into Dillon he discovered the “African Oasis” an upscale purveyor of orginal artworks, musical instruments, handsome pieces of classic décor, and so much more, all with a distinctive authentic African theme. This African-themed boutique offers an exquisite range of work sourced exclusively from Africa and made entirely by African craftsmen and women.

African Oasis is owned by publisher Richard Lendrum who publishes African Hunting Gazette, the high-quality periodical concerning all things related to the safari experience. Wim enjoyed visiting with the manager of African Oasis, Kim Gattone who applies her own special marketing and decorating touch to making African Oasis “the gathering place” for safari enthusiasts throughout the region. Kim is the veteran of several African safaris and the two traded marketing ideas for the remainder of 2019 and into 2020. Check out the African Oasis website at

Frontier wildlife studioAt the conclusion of the Western Hunting & Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City Wim headed to Helena, MT for the final Great Rockies Sport Show.  Along the way he visited Jacob Newman at his Frontier Wildlife Studio in Shelley, ID.  Here Jacob and Wim can be seen on either side of a wall pedestal that Jacob is working on that will support an enormous wolf that is very close to completion.  Behind the two of them can be seen an elk and a mule deer bracketing a tsessebe (the 2nd fastest antelope in the world behind the American pronghorn).  Jacob has a solid track record of preserving African animals for his clients, including several full-body mounts of lions, and he told Wim he is now working on his first crocodile.

Chacma Safaris made its appearance at the Western Hunting & Conservation Expo February 14-17 (inclusive) at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City (  This show is very well known, extremely popular, and just gets better year after year.  The festivities start at the opening of the doors on Thursday and seem to run continuously, day and night, through Sunday.  The Expo was expanded this year with additional floor space and exhibitors.  This venue draws attendees from far and wide; the attendance on Saturday was phenomenal.  Look for us at this event in 2020 at a new booth location in the main exhibit hall.  The show dates are February 13-16.

While Wim was traveling around Texas Retha attended the Jagd und Hund (Hunting and Hound) Festival held annually in Dortmund Germany ( Hunting and outdoor enthusiasts from all across Europe (80,000 visitors) attend this well-known festival featuring hunting outfitters from 40 countries, optics and rifle manufacturers, and dog breeders exhibiting a wide array of hunting breeds.

Retha enjoyed reminiscing with clients from previous years and meeting new prospective clients interested in all that we have to offer in South Africa and Mozambique. The 2020 6-day festival will be held 28 January – 02 February. Look for us there in 2020 at the booth.

Next stop on our visit to Fredericksburg was the taxidermy shop of client Terry Hartcraft.  Wim enjoyed seeing all the trophies that Terry harvested on his safaris in Africa and the artistic skills he applied to "bring them back to life".  Terry and his wife are habitual lovers of the safari experience and we hope to see them once again under African skies very soon.

Everyone knows Texas is a great hunting state, and we are fortunate to have a good many clients there.  After our great evening with the Houston Chapter of SCI, Wim took to the road to meet with a number of these good people.  James Neutze's bow shop ("Bow Pros" 830-997-2697) in Fredericksburg, TX is one of our favorite stops in the Texas Hill Country.  When not actually "on safari" it is great to reminisce about it with old friends.  If you're in the Fredericksburg area drop by Bow Pros and say hello to James.

The Houston Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI) has garnered the coveted "Chapter of the Year" award from National Headquarters for the last two years in a row.  We are really impressed with this chapter and were fortunate to be invited to attend their "Bucks, Beer, and BBQ" night honoring a multiplicity of outfitters engaged in a broad spectrum of outdoor interests.  The chapter representatives personally visited each outfitter's booth and made us feel really welcome with that great Texas hospitality and all the BBQ we could eat!  Please check out their website at  Their big fundraiser will be held in July and anyone can register to bid online for a fantastic array of equipment, domestichunts, and African safaris.  Don't miss it !

18  to 20 January 2019 - Billings, Montana at MetraPark Booth #46

Following our initial attendance at the Great Rockies Sportshow in Bozeman we proceeded to our second Great Rockies Sportshow in Billings on January 18-20.  As in Bozeman, Montanans demonstrated their interest in the great outdoors and we had quite a sizable interest in the safari experience from the many attendees.  After all the excitement of a 3-day show Wim layered on some additional excitement in driving from Billings to Denver heading out early on the 21st in near blizzard-like conditions.  A South African driving in snow, that's a hoot!

Whenever we are traveling between marketing shows we take every opportunity to meet with existing clients and prospective new clients to reminisce or to plan new adventures.  So, between the two Great Rockies Sportshows in Bozeman and Billings Wim was able to meet with good friend and client Randy Smith.  Two of the many outstanding trophies Randy harvested with us were a cape eland bull and an impressive sable.  As the sable mount was receiving its finishing touches at Randy's taxidermist the two of them payed a visit to the shop to see the near finished specimen.

We just concluded the Great Rockies Sport Show in Bozeman, MT.  This was our first time attending this show and really enjoyed meeting the attendees that visited our booth.  We met some great hunting enthusiasts who we hope to convert to "safari enthusiasts".  The weather was cold and sunny making Saturday the biggest day of attendance.  Lots of folks signed up for our Newsletter.  Visit our website if you would like to be added to our mailing list

We usually are traveling in the United States during the months of January, February and March attending select hunting and conservation shows and meeting with both established clients as well as new clients.   Our marketing focus is often the smaller regional or community shows where experience tells us we are able to meet with and establish a personal relationship with prospective safari enthusiasts.  During our travels we often detour to meet committed individuals and groups who want to learn more about what Africa has to offer in terms of hunting opportunities.  Please let us demonstrate to you how we can meet your safari expectations.  Come visit us at one of the following venues or catch us in between.
